When the battens let go

Battens are often the weakest link in older houses.

Damage: battens and sheets lifted off
The fix: battens screwed down to the rafters

What went wrong

The roof sheets were fixed to the battens, but the battens were only nailed down. The wind lifted them off together.

Another house looked fine from outside, but many battens had started to pull away.

The fix

Screw every batten down to each rafter. It’s one of the best value upgrades, and easiest when you reroof.
