About Weather the Storm

Practical, research based steps to help Australians make their homes stronger.

Who we are

Weather the Storm was developed by the Cyclone Testing Station at James Cook University, with Geoscience Australia and the Bushfire and Natural Hazards CRC. It gives homeowners and builders practical information on maintaining and retrofitting older Australian houses for severe wind.

The site has been refreshed with support from the Australian Reinsurance Pool Corporation (ARPC), to help more households understand their cyclone risk, take practical action, and see how stronger homes support more affordable insurance.

Backed by research

The upgrades on this site have been tested with engineering analysis and computer wind modelling. The research also looked at the costs and benefits of upgrading older houses.

See Smith et al. (2020) and Parackal et al. (2019) for the peer reviewed research.

Information, not advice
